Resampling of ENSO teleconnections: accounting for cold-season evolution reduces uncertainty in the North Atlantic

چکیده
Abstract. We re-examine the uncertainty of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnection to North Atlantic following investigation Deser et al. (2017) (DES2017). Our analyses are performed on November–December (ND) and January–February (JF) means separately for a geographical area that covers larger extent in midlatitude than DES2017. The motivation splitting cold season this way arises from fact patterns underlying physical mechanisms different late fall compared midwinter. As DES2017, our main technique quantifying is bootstrap resampling. Amplitudes spatial correlations samples presented together effectively using Taylor diagrams. In addition confidence intervals calculated Student's t tests percentiles anomalous sea level pressure (SLP) values samples, we also investigate additional techniques not widely used climate research but have advantages. contrast interpretation by results indicate can (at 5 % significance level) teleconnected SLP anomalies. uncertainties amplitudes remain large, with upper-percentile anomalies at up 2 times those lower Pacific 2.8 Atlantic.

Interdecadal Modulation of ENSO Teleconnections
The existence of quasi-decadal variability in the Pacific sector climate (e.g., Latif and Barnett 1994, 1996; Mantua et al. 1997; Minobe 1997) has important implications for long-range climate prediction in North America. The spatial manifestations in climate variables around the North Pacific sector associated with the North Pacific oscillation (NPO) are qualitatively similar to those of ENSO....
متن کاملSalinity change in the subtropical Atlantic: Secular increase and teleconnections to the North Atlantic Oscillation
[1] Recent studies comparing shipboard data between the 1950’s and the 1990’s have shown significant, heterogeneous adjustments of the temperature-salinity structure of the N. Atlantic Ocean. Here, we present proxy records of temperature and salinity from aragonite sclerosponge skeletons, extending existing records of the Salinity Maximum Waters (SMW) of the N. Atlantic back to 1890. These prox...

Two distinct roles of Atlantic SSTs in ENSO variability: North Tropical Atlantic SST and Atlantic Nio
[1] Two distinct roles of the Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SSTs), namely, the North Tropical Atlantic (NTA) SST and the Atlantic Niño, on the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) variability are investigated using the observational data from 1980 to 2010 and coupled model experiments. It appears that the NTA SST and the Atlantic Niño can be used as two independent predictors for predicting...
متن کاملSearching for decadal variations in ENSO precipitation teleconnections
In many regions the strength of El Niño—Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections has varied over the last century. It is an active area of research to investigate how such changes can be related to long-term climate variability or climate change. However, fluctuations due to the limited observational record and the low signal/noise ratio also contribute to variations in the apparent strength...
